Dallas Is Building the Next Economy. Who Is Building the Talent to Match?

Dallas has gotten pretty good at attracting big investments.

Corporate campuses, financial firms, technology companies and data centers have become familiar parts of the North Texas growth story. The numbers and announcements are impressive, but they don’t tell us much about who will actually benefit from the economy taking shape around them.

Several developments in Dallas-Fort Worth this week offer a better way to look at that question.

Texas Woman’s University is searching for space for a new college in downtown Dallas, preferably near the city’s growing financial district. An international aviation technology conference is underway in Grapevine. And on September 9, executives, researchers and technology leaders will gather in Dallas to discuss the development of a quantum-computing industry in North Texas.

These aren’t really three versions of the same story. Finance, aviation and quantum technology have very different economics and are at very different stages of maturity. What connects them is that Dallas is increasingly trying to develop the talent, institutions and business relationships that allow an industry to take root here instead of simply attracting another corporate office.

For Black professionals, entrepreneurs and families in DFW, that distinction is worth understanding.

A College Near “Y’all Street”

Texas Woman’s University is looking for a location in Uptown or downtown Dallas for a new college it expects to open in 2027.

TWU Dallas campus president Christopher Johnson told the Dallas Business Journal that the university wants to be part of the downtown environment, preferably near the central business district and Dallas’ expanding financial center. TWU is seeking a 10-year lease rather than constructing a campus from scratch, so this remains a plan rather than a completed real-estate deal.

Where the college ultimately lands could matter.

Goldman Sachs is building an approximately 800,000-square-foot Dallas campus expected to accommodate more than 5,000 employees. Morgan Stanley has announced a substantial Dallas expansion. Bank of America is preparing to occupy a new Dallas tower, while JPMorgan Chase already has a large North Texas workforce that extends well beyond traditional banking.

Dallas is also home to a growing exchange business. NYSE Texas opened its regional headquarters here in August, Nasdaq operates a Texas exchange, and the Texas Stock Exchange began trading this summer.

The “Y’all Street” nickname can sound like clever Texas branding, but there is now enough financial activity behind it to warrant a more serious conversation about what kind of labor market develops around that concentration.

That makes the proposed TWU college especially interesting.

TWU is working with the nonprofit Come to Believe to develop a business program aimed at academically qualified Dallas County students who face barriers to entering college. KERA reported that thousands of county high-school graduates with GPAs of at least 2.5 aren’t enrolled in higher education.

Putting an affordable college program near a growing financial center doesn’t guarantee those students access to financial careers. The real test will be what happens between the classroom and the employers nearby.

That means internships and apprenticeships, but also curriculum that reflects the skills companies are hiring for, relationships with working professionals and exposure to career paths students may not encounter otherwise. Dallas already has an example: Morgan Stanley’s expansion agreement includes plans to work with Dallas College students on internship and apprenticeship opportunities.

This is where the Y’all Street conversation becomes more relevant to Black Dallas.

A new Goldman Sachs campus makes a good skyline story. A young person from southern Dallas finding a credible route into finance, cybersecurity, analytics, risk management or financial technology tells us considerably more about whether the city’s economic growth is reaching the people who already live here.

DFW’s Aviation Advantage Is Changing

About 20 miles northwest of downtown Dallas, another industry is showing how much its workforce has changed.

Future Travel Experience Global is holding its 20th-anniversary gathering at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine from September 8 through September 10. Airlines, airports, technology companies, startups and other industry participants are discussing artificial intelligence, robotics, baggage technology, digital experiences, airport operations and other aspects of modern aviation.

Holding that conversation in North Texas makes sense.

DFW International Airport is one of the world’s major aviation hubs. American Airlines is headquartered in Fort Worth, and Southwest Airlines is headquartered in Dallas. Around those institutions sits a much larger collection of suppliers, contractors, technology companies and professional-services firms.

For somebody considering a career in aviation, that should broaden the picture considerably.

Airlines still need pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and airport operations professionals. They also operate enormous technology environments. They need cybersecurity specialists, software engineers, data professionals, product managers, architects, financial analysts and people who understand increasingly automated physical infrastructure.

There is an entrepreneurial side to this as well.

Large airlines and airports purchase technology, engineering, construction, consulting, recruiting, marketing, food services, training, transportation, facilities support and many other services. For Black-owned businesses, the useful question isn’t simply whether DFW aviation is growing. It is whether they understand what these organizations buy, how vendors qualify, where subcontracting opportunities exist and which capabilities will become more valuable as airports and airlines modernize.

That is less exciting than another headquarters announcement, but it is closer to how businesses actually participate in regional growth.

Dallas Is Looking Beyond Today’s AI Boom

Quantum computing requires more caution.

On September 9, the Texas Research Alliance is holding Quantum for the C-Suite at Park City Club in Dallas. The invitation-only gathering is expected to include executives and technology leaders from IBM, IonQ, ORCA Computing and the North Texas business and research communities.

Nobody should read too much into one executive conference.

Commercial quantum computing remains an emerging field, and predictions about when particular applications will become economically significant vary considerably. Dallas hasn’t suddenly become a quantum-computing capital because executives are discussing the technology here.

The more consequential development is the organizing taking place around it.

The Texas Research Alliance’s North Texas Quantum Economy Initiative is working on commercialization, workforce development and enterprise adoption of quantum technologies. At the state level, Texas has established the Texas Quantum Initiative covering quantum computing, networking and sensing, with provisions addressing research, workforce training, commercialization and supply-chain development.

North Texas is therefore considering its economic position before the technology has fully matured.

There is a useful lesson in that for professionals and students without turning quantum computing into the next career fad. By the time an emerging industry becomes obvious to everyone, universities may already have created programs, companies may have established partnerships, investors may have identified promising firms and experienced professionals may have spent years developing expertise.

For most people reading ABoD, learning quantum mechanics isn’t the logical response. Understanding that North Texas institutions are making long-term bets around advanced computing is.

What Does a Young Person Do With This Information?

We routinely tell young people to prepare for the future. That advice becomes more useful when they can see what employers and institutions around them are actually preparing for.

Consider a high-school student in DeSoto, Cedar Hill, South Oak Cliff, Frisco or Fort Worth who is particularly strong in mathematics. Finance, engineering and actuarial science are established possibilities. Data science, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence have expanded that menu, while quantum technology could eventually create another set of specialized careers.

A student who isn’t interested in advanced mathematics isn’t excluded from these industries. Financial institutions employ attorneys, communications professionals, recruiters, salespeople and operations leaders. Aviation companies need hospitality expertise, designers and marketing professionals. Technology firms employ accountants and procurement specialists.

The point isn’t to push students toward whichever occupation happens to be receiving attention this year. It is to help them understand the economy developing around them early enough to make informed decisions about education, skills and professional relationships.

Experienced professionals should be asking a different version of the same question.

A Black technology professional in Chicago considering a move to Dallas probably doesn’t need another ranking telling him that North Texas is growing. More useful information would show which industries are concentrating here, which technical skills they need, what senior-level opportunities exist and whether moving to Dallas improves his long-term career options.

An entrepreneur in Atlanta considering North Texas needs another set of answers. She may be more interested in who is buying, what companies are entering the market, how procurement works and where a smaller firm can establish a defensible position.

Those are the kinds of questions that turn economic-development news into usable intelligence.

Growth Doesn’t Distribute Itself

Dallas’ trajectory creates plenty of reasons for optimism, but proximity to growth doesn’t guarantee participation in it.

A company can employ thousands of people while nearby neighborhoods remain disconnected from its workforce. A sophisticated technology sector can develop without much Black representation. A university can locate near major employers without creating meaningful career pathways between students and those companies.

The useful work happens in those connections: employers creating substantive internships, colleges adjusting programs to actual market demand, entrepreneurs learning corporate procurement, professional organizations helping experienced workers move into expanding industries, and students encountering career possibilities early enough to prepare for them.

There is also a longer-term wealth question.

What happens after Black professionals enter these industries and accumulate expertise, relationships and capital?

Some will become senior executives. Some may invest. Others will start companies, purchase businesses, mentor younger professionals or become customers and advisers to Black-owned firms. Many will simply build successful careers and provide greater economic security for their families.

All of those outcomes matter.

That is why Dallas’ current growth deserves more than applause or skepticism. It deserves close observation.

When a university wants to locate students near an expanding financial district, pay attention to the career connections that follow. When global aviation technology leaders gather in DFW, look beyond the conference agenda to the companies, skills and contracts surrounding the industry. When North Texas starts organizing around quantum technology years before most people expect to use it, watch where the universities, employers and investment dollars begin moving.

Those signals won’t tell us exactly what Dallas will look like ten years from now. They can tell us where some of the doors are being built. For Black Dallas, the advantage comes from recognizing them early enough to walk through—or, in some cases, to own what is on the other side.
