Every year, the world’s major travel publications tell us which islands are the best.
But there’s a problem with taking those rankings literally: the No. 1 island in the world may not be the No. 1 island for your trip.
That’s especially true when you’re planning a boys’ trip or girls’ trip from Dallas.
Travel + Leisure’s 2026 World’s Best Awards named Koh Samui, Thailand, the world’s No. 1 island, followed by the Maldives, Galápagos Islands, Bali and Phuket. Seychelles, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Dominica and Zanzibar completed the Top 10.
It’s an impressive list. It’s also an imperfect way to plan a vacation.
The Maldives contains nearly 1,200 islands. Seychelles has 115. Fiji has more than 300. Koh Samui, meanwhile, is one specific island.
Travelers don’t experience an archipelago as a ranking. They experience a specific island, beach, hotel or villa, restaurant scene and nightlife, or lack of it. For Dallas travelers, there’s another consideration: getting there.
Providenciales might not beat the Maldives on pure tropical fantasy, but a seasonal nonstop from DFW can put you in Turks & Caicos in roughly four hours. Reaching a private Maldivian island can consume the better part of a day—or more—each way.
For a four-night trip, that’s decisive. However, for a ten-night trip, maybe it isn’t.
So instead of asking only which island is best, we’re asking something more useful:
Which of the world’s great islands actually works for your group, your calendar and the amount of vacation time you have?
Boys’ Trip vs. Girls’ Trip: What Are We Really Comparing?
This isn’t an argument that men and women inherently vacation differently. A boys’ trip might mean golf, fishing and cigars—or spas, exceptional restaurants and an oceanfront villa. A girls’ trip might center on wellness and shopping—or yachts, DJs and staying out until sunrise.
What matters more is the group-trip dynamic.
Great group destinations let people pursue different interests without fragmenting the vacation. Some travelers can spend an afternoon chillin’ at the beach club while others explore. Everyone reconnects for dinner, drinks or whatever comes next.
For an upscale group trip, six things matter particularly well: Setting, Luxury accommodations, Restaurants, Activities, Social energy, and Variety. Once you evaluate islands that way, the rankings start changing.
St. Barts: Best for Caribbean Luxury and Social Energy
St. Barts remains one of the strongest choices for a sophisticated group that wants luxury without isolation.
Spend the morning at St. Jean or Gouverneur Beach. Charter a boat in the afternoon. Return to the villa, then head into Gustavia for dinner and drinks. The attraction isn’t simply the beaches. It’s that villas, restaurants, yachts, beach clubs and social life coexist within a compact destination. That works equally well for a celebratory boys’ trip or girls’ trip.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Excellent
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Exceptional
Social scene — Exceptional
Nightlife — Strong
Luxury cost — $$$$$
The catch: St. Barts is expensive and requires an additional island transfer for Dallas travelers.
Best trip length from Dallas: 5–6 nights
Ibiza: Best for Luxury + Serious Nightlife
Reducing Ibiza to nightclubs actually misses much of what makes the island interesting.
Yes, some of the world’s most famous DJs and clubs are here. But Ibiza also delivers Mediterranean coves, restaurants, villas, yacht charters and very stylish, sophisticated beach clubs. More importantly for groups, everyone doesn’t have to follow the same itinerary.
Some people can spend the afternoon at a beach club. Others can charter a boat or explore the island. Everyone reconnects for dinner before deciding whether the night ends at midnight or sunrise.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Excellent
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Very Good
Social scene — Exceptional
Nightlife — Exceptional
Luxury cost — $$$$–$$$$$
The catch: Peak summer brings peak crowds and prices.
Best trip length from Dallas: 6–8 nights
Mykonos: Best for Greek Glamour
Mykonos occupies similar territory with a distinctly Greek personality.
Whitewashed villages and brilliant Aegean water provide the backdrop. Upscale restaurants, villas, beach clubs and nightlife provide the infrastructure. A well-designed Mykonos trip moves naturally from beach to sunset dinner to nightlife. One of our faves, tbh.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Excellent
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Very Good
Social scene — Exceptional
Nightlife — Exceptional
Luxury cost — $$$$–$$$$$
The catch: July and August can be extremely busy and expensive.
Best trip length from Dallas: 6–8 nights

Koh Samui: The 2026 Island to Watch
Koh Samui deserves special attention after finishing No. 1 globally in Travel + Leisure’s 2026 reader survey, with a score of 95.64.
It offers something difficult to find elsewhere: serious five-star tropical luxury without forcing travelers into a five-star resort bubble. There are villas, spas, restaurants, nightlife, boating and neighboring islands to explore.
For a boys’ trip, that creates an intriguing alternative to the usual Mediterranean and Caribbean destinations. For a girls’ trip, Samui’s wellness infrastructure adds another dimension without sacrificing restaurants, nightlife or beach time.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Excellent
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Excellent
Social scene — Strong
Nightlife — Strong in selected areas
Luxury cost — $$$–$$$$
The catch: Getting there from Dallas.
There is no nonstop DFW–Bangkok flight, and Samui requires another flight after reaching Asia.
Best trip length from Dallas: 8–10 nights minimum
This is one destination where the long journey can be turned into an advantage: Bangkok and Koh Samui makes a far more compelling long-haul itinerary than Samui alone.
Providenciales: The Dallas Wild Card
Here’s where the global rankings and the Dallas rankings begin separating.
When most upscale travelers talk about Turks & Caicos, they’re really talking about Providenciales—Provo—and particularly Grace Bay. The formula is straightforward:
Extraordinary Caribbean water…Luxury accommodations…Restaurants…Boating…Enough social activity to keep the trip interesting.
It isn’t Ibiza. That’s precisely why it works.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Excellent
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Exceptional
Social scene — Very Good
Nightlife — Moderate
Luxury cost — $$$$–$$$$$
The Dallas advantage: American Airlines’ seasonal DFW–Providenciales nonstop is scheduled to return in November 2026, with a scheduled flight time of roughly four hours.
That is a major advantage.
You can potentially leave North Texas in the morning and be looking at Grace Bay that afternoon.
Best trip length from Dallas: 4–5 nights
For a short luxury island escape from Dallas, Providenciales may be the most practical destination in this entire article.
Seychelles: Don’t Just Book “Seychelles”
Seychelles finished No. 6 globally in Travel + Leisure’s 2026 ranking. But Seychelles isn’t one island. It’s an archipelago of 115.
That makes choosing the right island more important than choosing the country:
Mahé offers the most infrastructure, restaurants and activity.
Praslin balances extraordinary beaches, nature and upscale accommodations.
La Digue delivers some of the world’s most recognizable tropical scenery.
Then there are private islands operating at an entirely different level of exclusivity. For a group trip, the better strategy may be Mahé + Praslin or La Digue, rather than staying on one island for the entire vacation.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Very Good
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Exceptional
Social scene — Limited to Moderate
Nightlife — Limited
Luxury cost — $$$$–$$$$$
The catch: Distance.
There is no DFW–Mahé nonstop, and inter-island transportation adds another layer.
Best trip length from Dallas: 8–10 nights
Maldives: The Ultimate Resort Trip Isn’t Necessarily the Ultimate Group Trip
The Maldives is extraordinary. Its water, overwater villas, marine life and private-island resorts approach the idealized image of tropical luxury. But that’s also the potential weakness. Many Maldivian islands essentially are their resort.
Once you arrive, that property controls much of your restaurant, entertainment and activity universe. You can’t necessarily decide after dinner to explore another neighborhood or try a completely different nightlife scene.
For honeymooners, couples or groups seeking decompression, that’s wonderful.
For highly social groups, it can become restrictive.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Good to Excellent, depending on the group
Girls’ trip — Very Good to Excellent
Beach/water — Exceptional
Social scene — Resort-dependent
Nightlife — Resort-dependent
Luxury cost — $$$$$
The catch: Long-haul travel followed, in many cases, by another speedboat or seaplane transfer.
Best trip length from Dallas: 8–10 nights minimum
The Maldives isn’t overrated. It’s frequently mis-categorized.
Moorea vs. Bora Bora: Don’t Automatically Pick the Famous One
Here’s one of the more interesting results from 2026.
Travel + Leisure readers scored Moorea at 87.23 and Bora Bora at 86.42 in its South Pacific category.
Not that Moorea is objectively better. But it does suggest travelers shouldn’t automatically choose Bora Bora because it’s the name they recognize.
Bora Bora delivers the iconic lagoon, Mount Otemanu and overwater-bungalow fantasy.
Moorea offers dramatic scenery with more opportunities for road trips, hiking and exploration.
For groups, the answer may be:
Don’t choose. Do both.
Start with the more active portion of the trip on Moorea. Finish with two or three nights of high-end resort luxury in Bora Bora.
Best for:
Moorea — Exploration and activity
Bora Bora — Iconic resort luxury
Combined — The stronger group itinerary
Luxury cost: $$$$–$$$$$
Best trip length from Dallas: 7–9 nights
Bali: Better Destination Than Beach Island
Bali demonstrates why “best beach” and “best island vacation” aren’t synonyms.
If we’re ranking beaches alone, Bali probably doesn’t belong alongside Seychelles, Maldives or Turks & Caicos.
But Bali’s strength is everything surrounding the beach.
A group can rent a villa, visit temples if that’s your thing, eat exceptionally well, spend an afternoon at a beach club, move between Seminyak and Uluwatu, visit Ubud and add wellness or adventure days.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Excellent
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Good to Very Good
Social scene — Exceptional in the right areas
Nightlife — Strong
Exploration — Exceptional
Luxury cost — $$$–$$$$
The catch: Traffic and the long journey from Dallas.
Best trip length from Dallas: 8–10 nights minimum
Mallorca: The Sophisticated Mediterranean Alternative
Mallorca deserves more attention from American group travelers.
It doesn’t have Ibiza’s club-first reputation, but it offers beaches, sophisticated hotels, Palma’s restaurants and shopping, mountain villages, boating and enough nightlife to keep the trip interesting.
For groups wanting Mediterranean sophistication without making clubbing the organizing principle of the vacation, Mallorca can actually be stronger than Ibiza.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Excellent
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Excellent
Social scene — Strong
Nightlife — Strong
Exploration — Exceptional
Luxury cost — $$$$
Best trip length from Dallas: 6–8 nights
Sardinia: The Luxury Sleeper
Sardinia may be the sleeper of this conversation. Travel + Leisure named it Europe’s No. 1 island for 2026.
Costa Smeralda combines Mediterranean water with yachts, luxury hotels, restaurants, beach clubs and an affluent summer social scene. But Sardinia isn’t merely Porto Cervo.
Cagliari offers restaurants and bars. The Maddalena archipelago adds extraordinary boating. Inland villages and archaeological sites provide cultural depth.
The read:
Boys’ trip — Excellent
Girls’ trip — Excellent
Beach — Exceptional
Social scene — Strong in the right areas
Nightlife — Moderate to Strong
Luxury cost — $$$$–$$$$$
The catch: Summer pricing and additional travel logistics from Dallas.
Best trip length from Dallas: 6–8 nights
For travelers who’ve already done Ibiza, Mykonos or the French Riviera, Sardinia deserves serious consideration.

Dallas Escape: Match the Destination to the Time You Actually Have
This may be the most important part of the article for North Texas travelers.
Have 4–5 Nights?
Pick: Providenciales
The seasonal DFW nonstop fundamentally changes the economics of time.
St. Barts remains attractive, but Dallas travelers generally need to reach a Caribbean gateway such as St. Maarten and then continue by regional aircraft or ferry.
Providenciales wins on convenience. St. Barts wins on concentrated luxury and social energy.
Have 6–8 Nights?
Look toward:
Ibiza
Mykonos
Mallorca
Sardinia
St. Barts
Once you’re crossing the Atlantic, three nights isn’t enough.
And the European connection can become part of the vacation:
Barcelona + Ibiza
Madrid or Barcelona + Mallorca
Rome + Sardinia
Athens + Mykonos
Have 7–9 Nights?
Consider:
Moorea + Bora Bora
Rather than flying that far for a single resort experience, combining two French Polynesian islands gives the trip more range.
Have 8–12 Nights?
Now the long-haul heavyweights become realistic:
Koh Samui
Bali
Maldives
Seychelles
And combination trips become compelling:
Bangkok + Koh Samui
Singapore + Bali
Doha or Dubai + Maldives
Seychelles + African safari, if the budget and calendar allow it.
What About Dallas Love Field?
For almost every international island discussed here, DFW is the practical Dallas gateway.
Love Field can occasionally make sense when positioning through another U.S. gateway, particularly using Southwest, but it will usually introduce an additional connection rather than simplify the trip.
Compare both airports when booking. Expect DFW to win most of the time.
When Should You Go?
Seasonality can overrule almost every ranking in this article.
| Destination | Generally Strong Travel Window* |
| St. Barts | Dec–Apr |
| Providenciales | Dec–Apr |
| Ibiza | May–Oct |
| Mykonos | May–Oct |
| Mallorca | May–Oct |
| Sardinia | May–Sep |
| Koh Samui | Generally Jan–Aug |
| Bali | Generally Apr–Oct |
| Seychelles | Year-round; Apr–May and Oct–Nov can be particularly attractive |
| Maldives | Generally Dec–Apr |
| Moorea/Bora Bora | Generally May–Oct |
*Broad climate-planning guidance, not a weather guarantee. Shoulder seasons can sometimes produce better prices, fewer crowds and excellent conditions.
For Dallas travelers, that creates a useful rhythm:
Winter: Caribbean and Maldives
Late spring: Mediterranean, Seychelles and French Polynesia become increasingly attractive
Summer: Mediterranean islands dominate the social-trip conversation while Bali and Koh Samui remain compelling
Fall: Mediterranean shoulder-season opportunities emerge while tropical weather deserves closer scrutiny elsewhere
Don’t Confuse Expensive With Good Value
“Luxury value” doesn’t mean cheap.
It means what the group receives for the money spent.
St. Barts, Mykonos, Maldives and Bora Bora can reach extraordinary price levels once premium accommodations, restaurants, transfers and group activities are included.
Koh Samui and Bali can deliver villas, private pools, drivers, restaurants and high service levels at very different economics.
Group size changes the equation again.
A large villa divided among several travelers or couples can provide more privacy, communal space and sometimes better per-person economics than booking multiple premium hotel rooms.
That’s why comparing hotel nightly rates alone can be misleading when planning a group trip.
So Where Would I Send a Dallas Group?
If the trip were being planned today:
Best 4–5 night escape: Providenciales
Best luxury Caribbean social trip: St. Barts
Best European party-luxury trip: Ibiza
Best Greek social trip: Mykonos
Best sophisticated Mediterranean trip: Sardinia
Best balanced Mediterranean trip: Mallorca
Best tropical luxury/value long-haul: Koh Samui
Best variety long-haul: Bali
Best pure beach/resort luxury: Maldives
Best scenery and island-hopping: Seychelles
Best South Pacific combination: Moorea + Bora Bora
And after looking at all of them through both a boys’ trip and girls’ trip lens, the most interesting conclusion isn’t about gender at all.
The best destinations overlap considerably so the itinerary is what changes.
One group might build Ibiza around boats, restaurants and clubs. Another might build the same island around coves, spas, shopping, sunset dinners and one big night out.
For Dallas travelers, Providenciales can beat a globally higher-ranked island for a four-night escape because you’re spending those four nights enjoying the island instead of sacrificing a substantial portion of the trip getting there.
Give the same group ten nights and the calculation changes. Koh Samui, Bali, Seychelles and the Maldives suddenly become serious contenders.
So before choosing the island, answer five questions:
- Who’s traveling?
- What does the group actually want to do?
- What month are you going?
- How many nights do you have?
- How much travel and luxury spending are you willing to accept?
Then choose the island…because the world’s most beautiful beach won’t rescue the wrong trip.
Sources & Methodology
The 2026 benchmark used in this article draws primarily from Travel + Leisure’s 2026 World’s Best Awards, including its global, Asian, European and South Pacific island results. Destination geography and current airline-routing information are used to interpret those rankings from a Dallas travel perspective.
The article intentionally separates published reader-survey results from editorial analysis. Descriptions such as “Excellent,” “Exceptional,” Dallas convenience assessments and boys’/girls’ group-trip recommendations are editorial judgments based on beaches, luxury accommodations, dining, social environment, activities, accessibility and suitability for group travel.
Air service and schedules can change seasonally. Travelers should verify current schedules before booking.
