Help! Dallas Ft Worth is Too Big to Date Someone Outside My Hood!

Before we get into how to date someone on the other side of the massive Dallas Ft. Worth metroplex, let’s establish some basic facts. DFW is the largest land-locked area in the entire country. It encompasses 13 counties, and the key cities are typically listed as Dallas, Ft. Worth, Plano, Frisco, Arlington, Irving, and Richardson, with notable bedroom oriented cities such as Lewisville, Carrollton, Southlake, Keller, Allen, Grand Prairie, Rockwall/Rowlett, Garland/Mesquite and Grapevine. Some 6.5 million people call DFW home, which makes us the largest metroplex in the South and the fourth largest in the nation. Total square miles is almost 9,300, larger than a couple of notable states in New England. DFW is the sixth largest economy in the world in terms of gross metropolitan product. We are the economic jewel of Texas, which is the best economy in the country. Therefore, more people are moving here than ever before from all over the country.

That means the local dating scene can be expected to become trickier form now on, especially since the kinds of white collar jobs DFW produces is drawing a lot of degreed and professional singles women here! Sorry ladies.

With so many single professionals coming to Dallas-Ft. Worth, ideally where should they move to and how does, say, a sista in DeSoto date a brotha who lives all the way up in Frisco? Let’s address both scenarios.

Where Should Singles Live in Dallas Ft. Worth?

All DFW cities have their charming qualities, so I don’t want any of them taking this the wrong way. But in general, single professionals should live as close to the pulse of key DFW cities with a vibrant urban atmosphere as possible. Why? Because you want to increase your chances of having a successful dating experience in DFW. My picks of DFW cities for singles to live in: Downtown Dallas (pretty much central Dallas, including uptown, midtown, Park Cities, and North Dallas), Downtown Ft. Worth,  E. Ft. Worth/N. Grand Prairie), Addison/Farmers Branch, Irving/Las Colinas, Carrollton, Plano, north Arlington.

Some might look at the list of cities and notice I didn’t list Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Lancaster, Duncanville, Glenn Heights since these have large numbers of African Americans. This is true, but keep in mind that the suburbs south of downtown Dallas are accessible to the central Dallas area (downtown, uptown, etc), but becomes less convenient to those in powerhouse cities north of Dallas and in the western part of the DFW area. So it would be advisable to live closer to where the action is if you don’t like your current dating successes.

Convenient Halfway Meet Up Areas

Nevertheless, there will be those who still insist on living in DFW cities that are much more convenient for families than single people. The following table provides a guideline for picking ideal locations that are convenient to both of you.

DFW Location of Dater #1 DFW Location of Dater #2 Common Meeting Spots
South of Downtown Dallas North of Downtown Dallas Downtown Dallas, Mockingbird Station, Northpark mall, West Village, Shops at Park Lane, Highland Park Village, Bishop Arts District, Trinity Groves, White Rock Lake, Galleria, Knox Henderson, Deep Ellum, Lower Greenville
North of Dallas South of DFW Airport Irving spots on MacArthur Blvd from 114/John Carpenter to 635, Addison, northwest Dallas spots near 35 and Northwest Highway, Galleria, Grapevine, Southlake Town Center.
North of Downtown Ft. Worth South of Downtown Ft. Worth Downtown Ft. Worth, Mid Cities/HEB (Hurst, Euless, Bedford), Arlington Highlands, Parks Mall, Hulen MallI, Irving/Las Colinas
Northwest of DFW Airport Southeast of DFW Airport Irving spots on MacArthur Blvd from 114/John Carpenter to 635, Addison, northwest Dallas spots near 35 and Northwest Highway, Galleria, Grapevine, Southlake Town Center.
South of Ft. Worth North of Dallas Irving spots on MacArthur Blvd from 114/John Carpenter to 635, Addison, northwest Dallas spots near 35 and Northwest Highway, Southlake Town Center.

If you happen to live in, say, Arlington, and have decided you simply don’t care to date someone more than 10 miles from you, then Arlington Highlands and Lincoln Square/Cowboys Stadium areas will be your best dating area for those in surrounding cities like Grand Prairie, South Ft. Worth, Mid Cities/HEB, Cedar Hill, and South Irving. For those in the north Plano, McKinney, Allen and Frisco areas, you have Shops at Legacy, Stonebriar Mall, Watters Creek, Fairview/Allen where fun places like Top Golf are, downtown Plano with trendy places like Urban Crust and the restaurants of Collin Creek Mall just down the street. Those in the suburbs south of Dallas have Bishop Arts District and Trinity Groves, plus numerous hot spots like RTs and Uptown Village in Cedar Hill. Those east of Dallas have Rockwall Pier, White Rock Lake, Firewheel and Town East Mall. Southlake Town Center can accommodate all of those in Southlake, Grapevine, Keller, North and East Ft. Worth, Trophy Club. Lewisville and Denton can meet up in the Vista Ridge Mall area (which includes places like Chaucers, Fox N Hound, Main Event, BJs, and numerous other places), Lake Lewisville. Top Golf in The Colony can accommodate those who live in Lewisville or Denton who want to date someone in Little Elm, The Colony, N Carrollton, West Plano, West Frisco, and Prosper.

  1. Since I don’t see a gay perspective for the thousands of black gay brothas in DFW, I would like to give one. People always talk about Atlanta’s black gay scene but Dallas is just as good, if not better. I’m a black gay man (sorta a socialite) and a degreed professional that likes the finer things in life.

    1. The best part of DFW to live in for “single and ready to mingle” black gay professionals is the downtown area (if you can’t afford it, get as close as possible). I live downtown and I’ve met so many fine black men with seemingly good heads on their shoulders. They from all over too … ATL, LA, NYC, DC with all kinds of careers and ways of life …. so it’s not only one kind of black gay that lives here. And the area is very Democratic (blue) so there’s more progressive and mature attitudes toward homosexuality than not. I’ve never had issues, plus there’s a noticeable out gay presence here since it’s so close to all the gay hotspots.
    2. The best places to meet your black Mr. Right is at JRs and Zippers on a Friday and Saturday night. Just about any popular brunch spot in Uptown on Saturday morning is good too. And KKMS events are really hot too, they occasionally throw sophisticated parties in different upscale venues in Downtown and Uptown. And also house parties are really big here, but you have to know people to get invited so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and exchange cells with black gay men when the opportunity presents itself. Remember to avoid the Brick unless you into the too young and too ratchet … that’s all I’ll say on that.
    3. The “gay” malls are Northpark and the Galleria. That’s where you’ll find “us” shopping to stay fly … one thing about Dallas black gays is that we dress quite well compared to our straight brothas. It’s not uncommon to see us overdress for just basic events which is one thing I love about the black gay culture in DFW … the FASHION (after all DFW does have the most malls per capita than any city in the US and is the founding place of Neiman Marcus) … so many are so creative! With that said, make sure you always put your best foot forward! Happy Hunting fellas!
