SBA Wants to Redefine “Small Business.” What Could It Mean for North Texas Firms?

The SBA proposal would replace nearly 1,000 distinct industry size standards with 338 broader standards. Depending on the industry, a standard is based on average annual receipts or employee count. SBA estimates the changes would result in a net increase of 114,541 firms classified as small nationwide. That is a projection, not a count of Dallas–Fort Worth businesses or Black-owned firms that would qualify. The proposal has not become a final rule.

Dallas Is Building the Next Economy. Who Is Building the Talent to Match?

What happens after Black professionals enter these industries and accumulate expertise, relationships and capital?

Some will become senior executives. Some may invest. Others will start companies, purchase businesses, mentor younger professionals or become customers and advisers to Black-owned firms. Many will simply build successful careers and provide greater economic security for their families.

All of those outcomes matter.
