Oak Cliff’s Texas Theatre Pays Homage to MLK’s Bayard Rustin

Daniel Villareal contacted us this week about an interesting aspect of Martin Luther King Jr’s life that is not widely known:

Bayard Rustin lived as a literal outsider for much of his, fighting for civil rights as a dual minority at the right hand of Martin Luther King, Jr. and company.

Most folks don’t know about Bayard Rustin; that’s why we’re screening Brother Outsider, to teach others about his amazing story and life’s work.

Nancy D. Kates and Bennett D. Singer’s documentary follows the lesser known civil rights leader out of the closet and into the streets as he helps organize the largest March on Washington (the historic march of August 28, 1963), all while being scrutinized and vilified by both sides of the racial, sexual, and spiritual divide.

Come celebrate National PRIDE Month with CinéWilde as we pay homage to a man who overcame discrimination from his closest brothers and inspired countless others to be the change needed in this world.

4 pm – Pre-show discussion w/ local Black LGBTQ activists

4:30 pm – Film

6 pm – Post-show Interview with filmmaker Bennett D. Singer and Bayard’s partner

Tickets to the film screening are $10.50 each. We’ll also be offering a limited number of free tickets to those who can’t afford them. Simply send your first and last name to cinewildedallas@gmail.com to receive a complimentary ticket.
